Finish the Game

What are we doing here? Why does the universe exist? What marvels and wonders await us in this great expanse of space and time? The future holds untold fortunes of all kinds, monetary, physical, intellectual and more. It is more valuable to wake up tomorrow than it is to have a billion dollars. We don’t want a billion dollars to spend in a hundred years and then die. A billion dollars is pocket lint compared to the value that being alive provides.

At the end of the history channel show called The Universe, they talked about how people across time have been trying to figure out these mind bending puzzles that reality submerses us in, and how our understanding is continuously evolving and being added to as the big picture of it all is put together. At the very end they say something like “let’s see how it ends”.

It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from one of the Young Guns movies. In the movie, based on a true story, the character Bill Bonney and his crew have started a war with the corrupt and brutal Murphy-Dolan political faction, who have been working to drive political and economic competitors out of town so they can reap greater profits. The corrupt faction has killed countless people, including one of their competitors, prominent local cattle rancher, John Tunstall, who had taken in Bonney and his crew as farm hands. The crew then exacts justice by gunning down a couple of the killers and going out in search of more of them. Later in the story, one of the crew is beginning to lose their nerve, and Bonney works to convince him to keep going, no matter how hard it may seem.

He tells him a story,

“You remember the stories John use to tell us about the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, ‘Hey, the world’s coming to an end!’ and the first one says, ‘Well, I best go to the mission and pray,’ and the second one says, ‘Well, hell, I’m gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores,’ and the third one says ‘Well, I’m gonna finish the game.’ I shall finish the game, Doc.”

We are born into a game where some of the winning chips grant us indefinite life and the chance to experience the future of more of this mystery. We can see that the sky is falling in the form of death to us all. People have come running in telling us that we should pray, or go to the local saloon to live it up, and all the rest. They say we should build our houses, study the flowers and sail the seas while we can. They want people to forget about indefinite life extension. It’s too fanciful, the mountain is too tall, the corruption is to deep. Let it go. Indulge in what you have while you can, they say.

The sentiments of indefinite life extensionists answer back: We shall finish this game.

Whether we die before we want to or not, we fight for life, we see it through to the end.

Fight, do what’s right, pay attention, think, seize the moment, don’t be a quitter. Harness this opportunity and this magical mysterious existence for what it’s worth - finish this game.

Existence left us here enshrouded in mystery, with the answers to the big picture of it all hidden within this cosmic game of clue. We cannot sit here and run societies grind while the big game flies past. That’s like getting to Disney Land and staying in a restaurant, drinking water and watching reruns on television the whole time. That’s like finding the arc of the covenant, playing cards on it and then leaving. That’s like finding a portal to a dimension filled with boundless curiosities and then burying yourself in a hole in the ground.

We have all been given a golden ticket to the game. Some of us are brave enough to travel the distance, to ride through the rain and thorn bushes to get to the border. Some of us already understand the sacrifice that is inherent upon us. There is a locked door at the end of this trail, and on the other side is life and the future. A cognizant, rational person does what it takes to get to that door and work to help open it.

Let us growing ranks of people who can see that we do have to go there to get there, that there is an end to aging, that there are paths to indefinite life extension, put you on our team. We are in it to win it. Let us work together to build this opportunity, this piece of the next human evolution revolution, the movement for indefinite life extension.

Humanity is moving toward the Transhuman era at ever accelerating speeds. Now is the time to grab the bulls by the horns. Step up to the plate, play to win, and let’s finish the game.
