On a personal note, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness in 2003 and my physician informed me the only treatment was still in testing and had severe and debilitating side effects. In hopes of avoiding the uncertain outcome, I participated in a clinical trial for a new, less dangerous drug. After six months there was no improvement and the doctor advised me to go ahead with the previously recommended treatment. If I did not, my life expectancy was two years. 

After another six months of treatment, the doctors informed me the drugs were successful and I was in the clear, however they could only be sure after another six month waiting period. Alpha-lipoic Acid 

In recent years, one of the leading breakthroughs in antioxidant research has learned that lipoic acid is the most versatile and powerful antioxidant in the entire antioxidant defense to help control free radical damage. Alpha-lipoic acid recycles vitamins E and C to help control free radical damage. 

To understand how alpha-lipoic acid and R-dihydro-lipoic acid work against various degenerative disorders, it is necessary to understand how these compounds work in the body — specifically, how they interact chemically with other critical antioxidants such as glutathione and vitamins C and E to combat harmful reactive oxygen species. 

Human aging is marked by a sharp decline in the concentration, synthesis, and recycling of central antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, CoQ10, and glutathione. This loss of antioxidant function reduces the body’s ability to protect tissues from highly reactive free radicals. Left unchecked, free radical proliferation leads to increased oxidative damage to DNA, cell membranes, mitochondria, and organs. 

Over time, the cumulative effects of free radical damage can result in impaired immune function and increased incidence of cancers and degenerative diseases. 

Recommended dosage of alpha-lipoic acid is from 300 to 1,800 mg/day. 

Vitamin C 

The health boosting benefits of Vitamin C go far beyond fighting the common cold and flu. In fact, nutritional scientists have discovered that this potent antioxidant is crucial in supporting the health of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, bones, respiratory system, and more. 

Unfortunately, many people fail to consume enough vitamin C to realize its vast array of health benefits. The Federal Government Recommends 75-90 mg of vitamin C and most adults wrongly assume that’s enough. This “recommended dietary allowance” is only enough to prevent vitamin-C deficiency disease, such as scurvy, but not nearly enough to support optimal health. 

A high-dose vitamin C is effective in preventing and fighting infections, reducing heart attack risk, promoting longevity, and enhancing cancer survival. 

These very properties make vitamin C a valuable agent for improving immune function. By suppressing oxidative stress, vitamin C increases the lifespan of immune cells and reduces infection-related cellular damage. 

Vitamin C’s multifaceted effects in protecting against cardiovascular disease may be partly responsible for the strong association between optimal vitamin C intake and increased life span. 

The most widely reported study emanated from UCLA, where it was announced that men who took 800 mg a day of vitamin C lived six years longer than those who consumed the recommended daily allowance of 60 mg a day. The study, which evaluated 11,348 participants over a 10-year period of time, showed that higher vitamin C intake reduced cardiovascular disease mortality by 42%. 

Vitamin E 

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that makes up a family of eight related compounds known as tocopherols and tocotrienols. Alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form of vitamin E in humans. Alpha tocopherol and the other seven forms of vitamin E are powerful biological antioxidants. They protect living cells against the effects of free radicals, which are potentially damaging by-products of the body’s own metabolism. 

The natural form of vitamin E, d-alpha-tocopherol is superior to the synthetic, dl-alpha tocopherol, in terms of absorption and retention in the body. However, the synthetic “dl-” form is the most common form found in dietary supplements. 

Research shows that vitamin E may reduce risk of cardiovascular disease; boost immune system function; act as an antioxidant; enhance topical wound healing; and reduce cancer risk. Vitamin E protects cell membranes from the damage caused by free radicals. In addition, high doses decrease blood clotting which may reduce risk of heart disease. Vitamin E deficiency is associated with cataracts, heart disease, lung problems, and liver damage. The level of vitamin E intake required for heart, lung, eye and cancer protection are 10-30 times higher than the current RDA levels. 

The RDA for vitamin E is 15 mg or 22 IU, but most research studies show that optimal intakes associated with health benefits are in the range of 100-800 IU. 


In young people the cell membrane is about 60 or 70 percent phosphatidylcholine, and the cell membrane functions very well then letting nutrients in and letting toxins out. The body makes phosphatidylcholine, but very slowly, so over the years the phosphatidylcholine in the cell membrane depletes, and the cell membrane gets filled in with inert substances, like hard fats and cholesterol. This is one reason that cells become brittle as we get older. The organs stop functioning as efficiently and the skin of an elderly person is not as supple. So it’s a very important aging process to reverse, by supplementing with phosphatidylcholine for cellular growth and repair. 


Acetyl-L-carnitine is the biologically active form of the amino acid L-carnitine and has been shown to protect cells throughout the body against age-related degeneration. Most clinical research has focused on the brain, where improved mood, memory and cognition has been observed in response to the use of acetylL-carnitine. By facilitating the youthful transport of fatty acids into the cell’s mitochondria, acetyl-L-carnitine better enables dietary fats to be converted to energy and muscle. The most important anti-aging effect of acetyl-L-carnitine, is to work with coenzyme Q10 and alpha lipoic acid to maintain the function of the mitochondria. When the mitochondria function dwindles, degenerative disease becomes an inevitable consequence. Acetyl-L-carnitine is also used as a multipurpose anti-aging supplement. 

The optimal dose range of acetyl-L-carnitine for healthy people is 1000 mg to 2000 mg day. Those with neurological deficit should consider 3000 mg a day. Synergistic nutrients that could be taken with acetyl-L-carnitine include coenzyme Q10 (100-300 mg/day) and alpha lipoic acid (250-500 mg/day). 

A plethora of published studies on acetyl-L-carnitine has heightened our awareness of the multi-faceted benefits of this amino acid. Published research shows acetyl-L-carnitine is critical to youthful cellular function in the brain, heart, liver, peripheral nerve and immune system.

Supplementation with acetyl-L-carnitine becomes an even greater consideration when we realize the potential anti-aging effects this amino acid may produce when taken in combination with coQ10 and alpha lipoic acid. 

Coenzyme Q10 

The mitochondria are the cells’ energy powerhouses, and coenzyme Q10 is an essential component of healthy mitochondrial function. CoQ10 is required to convert the energy from fats and sugars into usable cellular energy. Yet, the body’s production of CoQ10 declines significantly with advancing age and use of statin drugs. With an ample amount of CoQ10, the mitochondria can work most efficiently throughout the entire body including the most densely populated area, the heart. CoQ10 is also a potent antioxidant, helping protect proteins, LDL, and DNA. 95% of cellular energy is produced by the mitochondrial and CoQ10 will slow down the aging process as well as protect the heart. 

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) 

The largest glandular organ, the liver rids the human body of dangerous toxins. Entering the twenty-first century, one of our greatest health threats is pollutants. Uncounted toxic chemicals pollute what we eat, drink, and breathe. The battle against toxins is largely waged in the liver. The liver is the largest glandular organ, bears the burden in ridding the body of toxins. Those pollutants that cannot be processed and disposed of by the liver, are stored in fatty tissues, first in the liver and then in other parts of the body. N-acetylcysteine, derived from the simple amino acid cysteine, provides significant protection against a broad array of modern toxins. These include acrolein (found in cigarette smoke and auto exhaust), paraquat (a toxic herbicide) to mention a few. 

Research indicates that in addition to providing toxin protection, N-acetylcysteine is a selective immune system enhancer, improving symptoms and preventing recurrences of common lung-related illnesses such as chronic bronchitis. The list of conditions that can be improved with N-acetylcysteine supplementation seems to grow each year. For example, N-acetylcysteine recently was shown to reduce the proliferation of certain cells lining the colon, and it may reduce the risk of colon cancer, heart attack, gastritis and kidney stones. 

Supplementation with N-acetylcysteine also helps the body produce glutathione at more beneficial levels. Glutathione is the body’s most important antioxidant because of its location within the cell, which enhances its ability to neutralize free radicals. The antioxidant activity of N-acetylcysteine helps protect the liver from potentially adverse effects of exposure to a broad range of toxic chemicals, including those chemicals that can poison the body through cumulative use. While cysteine, the amino acid from which N-acetylcysteine is derived, is found in most high-protein foods, N-acetylcysteine is not derived from dietary sources. Nacetylcysteine is a powerful antioxidant. Optimal levels of supplementation are uncertain, but a considerable proportion of the research studies on N-acetylcysteine used 250-1,500 mg per day. 

N-acetylcysteine has no demonstrated sedative or stimulant effects, and tolerance is excellent for the vast majority of people who take it regularly. As a potentially powerful antidote to our polluted environment, N-acetylcysteine is a simple yet profound way to help protect the body against the ravages of the modern industrialized world. 

Green Tea 

Green tea has become a critical supplement due to the large volumes of published scientific findings that validate its multiple biological benefits. The most significant findings involve studies showing that green tea extract helps maintain cellular DNA and membrane structural integrity. Decades of research shows that green tea inhibits the development of undesirable cell colonies. Green tea is second only to water as the most consumed beverage in the world. The active constituents in green tea are powerful antioxidants called polyphenols and flavonoids. Several catechins are present in green tea and account for the bulk of favorable research reports. 

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most powerful of these catechins. EGCG functions as an antioxidant that is about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E. One cup of green tea may provide 10-40 mg of polyphenols and has antioxidant effects that are greater than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots, or strawberries. Theoretically, the high antioxidant activity of green tea makes it beneficial for protecting the body from oxidative damage due to free radicals. 


Carnosine is a natural anti-aging constituent in your body. Carnosine levels decline with age, leaving you with progressively weaker defenses against age-related processes. Carnosine supplementation can restore youthful carnosine levels in blood and tissues, and it extends the life spans of experimental animals of many species. 

Carnosine supplementation may protect against neurodegenerative diseases and stroke; it also enhances exercise performance and comfort, ameliorates diabetes and its complications, and protects heart muscle and blood vessels from atherosclerosis.

Curcumin, a group of polyphenolic plant pigments, is responsible for turmeric’s characteristic canary yellow color. Of course, not everyone finds curry palatable, especially on a routine basis. But virtually anyone can swallow a simple daily supplement. Most commercial products provide 300-500 mg per pill, standardized to 95% curcumin. Reported adverse reactions have been limited to mild gastrointestinal distress, which may be minimized by consuming curcumin with food.
