What you are

The big picture of existence is incredible. It is filled with mind-blowing dynamics and marvels to experience, travels to make, projects to undertake, realities to explicate, pleasures to sense, things to know, goals to pursue, treasures to uncover, questions to pose, answers to find and a lot more. All of that seemingly infinite mystery… This enormous, mysterious place with all this stuff is like a water twirl in a bathtub going down the drain. While in the process of all this incredible stuff exploding out and then twirling down the drain, one of the bits of “mold” has come to life, with the profound tools of the senses and the incredible command of sentience.

It’s stunningly miraculous - a bit of mold gets to understand as much of this place as it can. If the swirl had gone on without this speck and swallowed up into nothing and was forgotten to time, then that would be a tragedy. How tragic it would be if nothing got to experience and know it. As the incredible luck of the universe has it, that anomaly, that gloriously transcended mold over in the corner, can know and experience it.

Of course, people are that anomaly. It is up to us to know and experience this place. It is unacceptable to be privileged with a fortune so weighty as having keys to existence and then to simply to forget about it. It would be unacceptable to stumble upon a cave the size of a country with the ruins of great kingdoms and wonders, with treasures and libraries and technologies that have sat in the dust for hundreds of thousands of years, and to walk past the entrance to the cave and forget about it. That is not acceptable.

Your eyes are a giant chasm ripped open in a seemingly infinite realm of endless wonder. There are more molecules and atoms in one speck on one object in front of you than there are letters in all of the books in your City. When you gaze out, you take in an enormous chunk of existence. You yourself are still tiny in comparison to other things. You are a phenomenon, a incredible force of nature, a dying Titan of the elements.

What if the only place you could ever see anything was on one planet, one of the orbs out there, more hidden than one grain of sand in the desert? What if there was only one planet that you could experience chocolate on? How about if there were only one sphere in the universe that you could go to in order to ever experience the sense of hearing? Would those planets be important? Would they be worth preserving? You are like those planets except you are those things and more, all combined in one.

You are one of few objects in this universe that can sense your surroundings in a variety of ways and think about them. Just because this tiny orb has people on it in the 7 billion range, just because it may seem like a lot to us, it’s not. It’s not to the universe. There aren’t even nearly enough people here to put one person per galaxy in 1% of the galaxies that there are. Other galaxies want (and whether that is metaphorically speaking or not is another mystery) just one of you, are dying to show their true colors by having just one thinking chunk of matter be in it to harness it for all the wonders embedded in it. You are a one trillion percent priceless commodity to this realm. You are more complex and valuable than a book, a light bulb, a sky scraper, a planet. You aren’t just your own five senses, you are one of the bits of matter that has one set of the universe’s five senses on it. You belong to the universe. You are the universe trying to figure itself out.

It “figured out”, without a known conscious will, how to spark organic matter into self-perpetuating growth, finally, after eons, on one tiny little speck of a planet, over in one tiny little speck of a galaxy. It figured out how to turn into creatures, into fish, into other animals, apes, finally making its way to human and developing a cerebral cortex that can do all the fantastic things we can do. The universe is trying to create indefinitely long-lived thinking sense machines so it can keep going, keep recording, keep its files on hand rather than playing a big, millennia long, generational “game of telephone” with everything it is uncovering.

The universe needs you. You need the universe. This incredible, vast, mysterious realm is galaxies of planets filled with mountain ranges of volcanically brimming potential and wonder. Would you throw that away? We don’t even throw our old pictures away. People are really important to the universe and we have to live accordingly. We have to live with the big picture in mind.
