Your mouth is the gate to your extended life

We all want to live a healthy and long (preferably eternal) life. Not only that, we all want to look awesome and young with no wrinkles while we are living that long and healthy life. 

The thing is most of us will not think twice about grabbing the cracker box, the milk and sugary whole grain laden cereal in the morning, and a muffin or some such bakery every time we grab a coffee at Starbucks. Nor do most of us wake up to really look deeply and ask: “Is what I am eating going to help prolong my life?”

It is not an easy task to analyze every single thing we eat or drink’ but at the same time, it is a habit that we created, it is a paradigm we created for ourselves. And as such, it is something we have complete control over and can change whenever we decide. 

What you put in your mouth several times during the day, has the most significant effect on whether or not you are going to live a long life or short life, and whether or not the life that you do have left, is going to be laden with inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease, for example.

No matter what kind of ‘life extension’ technological advances are being created and produced out there, you are the one who has the most control over which genes to turn on and off by controlling the food you eat and what you do to your body on a daily basis.  

Contrary to an old science paradigm, our genes are not so hardwired that we have no control over what they do in our cells. As a matter of fact, we control whether or not our genes turn on or off with external factors such as food.

As Dr. David Perlmutter, the author of the recently published book ‘Grain Brain, explains:

“Your food matters more than anything you can do with respect to your health moment to moment and your food is hugely influential in changing for a better way the way that your genes express themselves. Our genes are influenced moment to moment by our specific lifestyle choices, and most importantly, food. The food that we choose to consume, dramatically modifies our gene expression and that more than 70% of our genes that have a role to play in health and longevity are under our direct control based upon our food…”

That is a lot of genes. And this means, if you are eating garbage, you are not, in any way, helping your life to be extended no matter what kind of gadgets you choose to wear or insert inside your body. 

So, what shouldn’t you eat?  

Well, humans should have a diet that is overall pretty low in carbohydrates. A diet low in carbohydrates, with adequate amounts of protein, and lots of good fats is called a ketogenic diet.

A ketogenic diet creates a biochemical environment inside your body that triggers certain genes to turn on. These genes express proteins that allow the body to grow new cells, new mitochondria, and to significantly reduce inflammation. 

Contrary to popular belief, the brain does not need carbohydrate to function, but needs cholesterol and fat!! 

According to Dr. Perlmutter in his interview for the fatburningman show:

“The brain does not require glucose to be powered for its energy demand. The brain thrives when it is shifted to burning fat, a process called Keto-adaptation. The brain is powered beautifully and far more efficiently and with a reduced rate of free radical production, when it utilizes primarily fat as a fuel source…” 

Humans should especially stay away from wheat, the worst of all grains. Wheat is a silent human killer; it transforms your body into an inflammatory kingdom. 

Not only is wheat the carbohydrate that increases your blood sugar faster than any other (due to its amylopectin A composition) causing a constant attack of high sugar in your blood, it has appetite stimulating effects, and addictive psychological effects as well. 

Dr. William Davis talks about this extensively in his book ‘The Wheat Belly:’

“The amylopectin of wheat is the form most readily digested by the enzyme amylase, thus explaining the greater blood sugar-increasing property of wheat products. The more rapid and efficient digestion of wheat amylopectin means higher blood sugars over the ensuing two hours after consumption of wheat products, which in turn means greater triggering of AGE (Advanced Glycation End-Products) formation.”

The digestion products of wheat (called exorphins) will also cross the blood-brain barrier and bind to opiate receptors in your brain (this is different than the immune phenomena triggered by gluten) – they will instruct your brain to desperately need more food in the form of wheat products!

A diet that allows your blood to have normal blood sugar levels for most of the time, as opposed to a repetitive high blood sugar situation, is the ideal for, not only a lean and healthy life, but absolutely crucial for extending one’s life as much as possible. 

Why? One of the reasons is that a diet that is low in carbohydrates will produce the least amount of AGEs in your body, and you will, therefore, significantly slow down, and sometimes even reverse aging. (A ketogenic diet will also trigger many life-extending genes to turn on.)

Don’t let the complicated name scare you; in fact, you should get to know this term really well for the sake of your own healthy and long life:

AGEs: Advanced Glycation End-Products = SUGAR and PROTEIN bonded together 

“The sequence of events leading to formation of AGEs goes like this: ingest foods that increase blood glucose. The greater availability of glucose to the body’s tissues permits the glucose molecule to react with any protein, creating a combined glucose-protein molecule…once AGEs form, they are irreversible and cannot be undone…it’s the stuff that stiffens arteries (atherosclerosis), clouds the lenses of the eyes (cataracts), and mucks up the neuronal connections of the brain (dementia)...” Dr. William Davis in his book ‘The Wheat Belly.” 

AGES are constantly produced in your body, even when your blood sugar is normal. But the more carbohydrates you eat, the higher the blood glucose, the more AGEs will accumulate, and the faster the decay of aging will proceed.  

As an interesting example, diabetics, who have much higher blood glucose than non-diabetics, have 60% greater blood levels of AGEs, and are, according to Dr. Davis, characterized as having accelerated aging. 

Though, as he explains in his book “…being non diabetic does not mean that you will be spared such fates. AGEs accumulate in non-diabetics and wreak their age-advancing effects. All it takes is a little extra blood sugar, just a few milligrams above normal, and — voila — you’ve got AGEs doing their dirty work and gumming up your organs.”

The more AGES you have circulating in your blood, the more inflamed your body will be and the faster the following will appear and progress:

Saggy skin



Join problems


Kidney disease

High blood pressure

Heart disease



Major loss of brain cells

AGEs are, of course, just one of the ways in which food affects the aging of our bodies. A high carbohydrate diet will also trigger the death of our precious neurons, for example. 

The high carbohydrate load coupled with the hormonal imbalance it creates, will cause the mitochondria in our brain cells to become deficient in energy production and to, therefore, signal our genome to express genes that will start a cascade of events that will eventually lead to the death of our precious brain cells. 

I have only touched on the surface of how the kind of food that we put in our mouths affect aging and, therefore, how long our life can be extended.

The point is: when it comes to life extension (and health, of course), you have got to start with yourself. You hold the key to your own long life. 

You do that by taking responsibility for your health and not relying on external factors such as advances in medicine or tech gadgets to live a long life. 

Sure, external factors coupled with technological advances are certainly awesome and could help us live longer, but only after our health has a good foundation from the inside out. 

So, how can you get started? 

The first thing is to open your mind and realize that just because most people eat something, and just because you have been eating a certain way for a long time, and just because nutritionists and doctors endorse a certain way of eating (like ‘eating whole grains is a healthy thing to do’ - and it is not!), it doesn’t mean that it is healthy, and it does not mean that you have to do it.

Then, get started on reading what science actually ‘says!’ - And not what only the government wants you to know. 

There are many places to start, but I would recommend ‘Grain Brain,’ by Dr. David Perlmutter and ‘The Wheat Belly’ by Dr. William Davis. These two books alone have enough credible, peer-reviewed journal references to really stretch your mind into a whole wonderful new world of real health. 

I also listen to lots of podcasts, which are free! So there’s no excuse to not listen and educate yourself. My absolute favorites: The fat-burning man show and the Bulletproof executive. 

Start with the above and get ready for an awesome long life.
